David Baddiel’s Cat Man is a relaxed, funny and charming series where comedian David Baddiel explores the world of cats, meeting owners obsessed with their felines and investigating cat-related phenomena, aiming to challenge dogs’ “man’s best friend” status. This was a dream job for editors Desi and Sam who loves cats and couldn’t wait to get stuck in!

The series has a warm, observational feel. Visually, it’s intimate, focusing on small moments rather than big set ups a look, a pause, a cat doing exactly what it wants. David’s narration and on-screen presence guide the series without dominating it, adding humour and self-deprecation while letting contributors and their cats take centre stage.

Sam Frost and Desiree Ivegbuna edited episodes 1 & 2 respectively and cut stories for various episodes across the series, helping shape its look, rhythm and storytelling approach.

We caught up with Desi to discuss the series, she commented “I absolutely loved working on the edit! I enjoyed the way I had quite a lot of freedom to get lost in the rushes and pick out what I thought works best. I am a cat person so I loved the subject matter! It was brilliant for me as I love comedy and the show revolved around humour, so it ticked all the boxes for me. The challenges I had were building quite a lot of effects as I don’t do that often, but it was great practice! And I felt I gained a lot of knowledge from the other editors. The team were brilliant as well, I had a really great time working with them”.

Sam chatted to us about the project and said “Honestly this was my absolute dream job,  what’s not to like about editing cats and cat people for 3 months? Huge thank you to Lou for sorting this booking for me. Huge thanks also to my assistant Gidget who helped me choose all the best shots. It was a fab team at Expectation and also great to work with David Baddiel in the edit. If I had to name a challenge – it was getting every cat that I know into the links. I created a split screen GFX transition between the scenes which was the perfect opportunity to turn friends and family felines into celebrities (for a couple of seconds)”.

Fun Fact: For anyone watching closely, Louisa’s cats, Meg and Goujon, also make their television debut! Satusfacton are currently in negotiations to represent the two but they are quite demanding 😬🐈🐈‍⬛
