Mr. & Mrs. Murder is a gripping four-part true crime docuseries, set in Tallahassee, Florida, it follows two seemingly inseparable couples: Kathy and Brian Winchester, and their close friends Mike and Denise Williams. Church-going and outdoorsy, they were pillars of their social circle until Mike vanished without a trace in 2000 during a duck-hunting trip. At first, it was believed to be a tragic accident. But when Brian divorced Kathy and later married Mike’s widow, Denise, suspicions mounted. What followed was a decades-long unravelling of lies, with a determined Kathy at its core, fighting for answers, justice, and the truth.

While many true-crime series rely on heavy drama reconstructions Mr. & Mrs. Murder takes a different route. Editor Franco Bogino shares insight into the documentary’s aesthetic: “There was no drama recon, just some vignettes that we called ‘haunted portraits’. They were moody, slightly surreal sets that represented a section of the story in an abstract kind of way. They were used very sparingly across the series and had no actors. The rest was purely interviews, beautiful GVs and lots of archive, mostly personal archive from one of the family members, and news archive from periods where the story was being covered. The story covers a 20-year span.”  

Franco also praised the collaborative approach in the edit: “The director was a real pleasure to work with,  he had a really clear vision but was flexible and open to suggestions. Once we’d done the first round of editing, he was very collaborative in bringing together differing creative ideas. The editor for episode 1 helped set the tone across the series and was great fun to work with. He and the director have worked together for years, so there was a real shared vision.”

Despite the challenges of working on such a layered story with a tight schedule, Franco reflects on the experience positively “This story had so much good material that it was hard getting it down to time. But having the EP01 editor available across all episodes made a huge difference. Plum Pictures were also really good to work with  friendly, supportive, practical. A pleasant experience all round. And it’s not often I say that”
