Trainwreck: Storm Area 51

Exec Producer: Alex Marengo

Editor: Charlie Webb

Back in 2019, 20-year-old Matty Roberts created a joke Facebook event titled “Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us.” What started as a tongue-in-cheek post quickly spiralled out of control. As the event went viral, with millions of people marking themselves as “going,” the U.S. Air Force and FBI swiftly responded with serious warnings. Trespassing on military property, they reminded everyone, could be met with deadly force. It didn’t stop the internet. Memes exploded. Plans were drawn to “Naruto-run” past bullets. People dressed up in sexy alien costumes and festival-style raves were planned in the Nevada desert.

This new instalment of the Trainwreck documentary series deep dives into the madness. Trainwreck: Storm Area 51 is a drama-documentary packed with high-energy VFX, blending interviews with viral YouTubers, military commanders, and UFO hunters. Editor Charlie Webb said “I really enjoyed working with the team. The characters in the series are larger than life , almost comic book like and the story is just absurd. So we really leant into that visually and tonally . We also worked very hard to capture the craziness of the internet and what was going on in people’s minds throughout, so it is vfx heavy. I’m really excited for people to finally see it as it’s very different to what else is out there”

Trainwreck: Storm Area 51 drops on Netflix on the 29th July.
