The Great Stink of 1858

DSP for Channel 5

Editor: Simon Warner

Exec Producer: Ninder Billing Khandelwal

DSP TV 2023

New two part series presented by Xand van Tulleken.

Tonight’s episode The Great Stink of 1858: Saving London edited by Simon Warner continues the story of the 19th-century smell which dominated London. The Thames river became putrid after thousands of litres of raw sewage were discharged into it every day in the 19th century and after a summer heatwave in 1858 the stink became so bad that it spread disease and panic over London.

Presenter Xand van Tulleken reveals how Queen Victoria suffered from the stench during a trip to see Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s gigantic ship, the Great Eastern. Archaeologist and TV presenter, Raksha Dave recreates the Great Stink with the help of a special-effects expert.

Simon explained the set up of the edit with this project. “With The Great Stink, I came on board to edit Episode 2, working with PD Sam Bailey and then Series Producer Jamie Simpson. It was a complete work from home edit, with media sent to me on drives rather than ‘remoting in’. This meant it was much quicker and smoother to edit with. Once I started working with Jamie, he liked to feel he was ‘in the room’ so we set up a FaceTime call at the start of the day with the phone pointing at the screen so he could see what I was doing, and we left the call open so we could comment on things as we needed to. Although I have worked from home almost entirely over the past three years, it was my first experience of working exactly like that with someone in the room with me. Despite my initial reservations, it was a rewarding and collaborative experience, and reminded me of the positive aspects of working in an edit suite with someone who understands editing workflow”.

The Great Stink of 1858 Part Two: Saving London is on Friday 17th Feb 9pm Channel 5

Both episodes will be available on My5.

Bafta winning Surgeons: At the Edge of Life has returned with a new series which started on Wednesday 18th January.

World renowned surgeons at Addenbrooke’s Hospital perform complex procedures to save lives. The hospital in Cambridge is an internationally renowned university teaching hospital and a centre of excellence for a number of specialities. The surgeons here take on complex cases where a successful operation can save and transform the patient’s quality of life. Technical skill is paramount as even the smallest slip of the scalpel would result in catastrophe, the surgeons bear the ultimate responsibility.

Footage for the documentary series is from fixed rig cameras linked to a remote gallery. Shots include close-ups of surgeons and other members of the surgical teams at work during the most critical moments during the operations.

Jayesh Lathia who edited the pre-title teasers for this series said that ‘This was a fascinating series to work on. There was much to learn about new medical advances and as always the key was to make sure that the emotional journey of surgeons and patients remained with the audience throughout’.

Tanya Trochoulias edited episode 5. She explained that “Surgeons has a dedicated team behind it, it’s well covered and is really enjoyable to work on. The operations are often complex and decoding the process, to get the drama of the surgery, is both interesting and rewarding”.

Deep Fake Neighbour Wars

Tiger Aspect

Editor: Gavin Ames

Deep Fake Neighbour Wars is a brand new comedy show premiering on ITVX in January 2023.

Produced by Tiger Aspect the series uses the very latest in AI technology to turn the UK’s best new impressionists into the world’s most famous celebrities – only here they are ordinary people who happen to be embroiled in petty silly neighbour disputes!

Gavin is a seasoned comedy editor who has been focusing on scripted comedy in recent years.  So when he was asked to work on this ground-breaking new comedy series with one of his favourite directors, Tom Vinnicombe, and involving some of Britain’s most talented comedians and impersonators, it was a no-brainer!

Deep Fake Neighbour Wars is a complex production which harnesses state-of-the-art visual technology to take some of the most famous people in the world and put them in down-to-earth situations. This Deep Fake technology results in Actor Tom Holland and rapper Nicki Minaj living together and arguing with Mark Zuckerberg over the garden fence. Gavin did face some technical challenges in the edit which he hasn’t come across before as this is the first time deep-fake technology has been used at this scale for broadcast globally.  He said “As well as having to cut the scenes for maximum comedy we also had to work closely with the deep fake experts at Studio Neural to make sure the shots we were providing would work with the AI. It was a pretty steep learning curve but I’m really pleased with how the show has turned out”.

We are hugely looking forward to this one!

The series starts on the 26th January on ITVX.

Series Director: Yemi Bamiro

BBC Studios for BBC

Produced in partnership with BBC Music, the four-part docuseries will premiere on BBC Two on the 21st January. Developed by Chuck D and his producing partner, Lorrie Boula.

Fight the Power: How Hip Hop Changed the World features insightful and intimate interviews with Chuck D and hip hop icons Grandmaster Caz, Ice-T, Abiodun Oyewole (The Last Poets), Roxanne Shanté, Run DMC, John Forté, will.i.am, MC Lyte, B-Real (Cypress Hill), Melle Mel, Fat Joe, Lupe Fiasco and more. It weaves these interviews with archive footage to tell the story of the relationship between politics and the hip hop movement and to explore how hip hop became a cultural phenomenon against the backdrop of American history.

Paul Holland is a big hip hop fan so this was the perfect project him. Speaking about the docuseries, he said “it was one of those  rare jobs where the narrative didn’t have to be unearthed in the edit thanks to director Yemi having a firm grip on the story he wanted to tell from the outset. The main challenges came from outside the edit suite and there were occasions when we had to fight for the cut. Ultimately everyone came on board and I’m very grateful to have had the opportunity to work on such a series”.

Part one will air on Saturday 21st January on BBC Two and iPlayer.
