New Order: Decades follows the band as they prepare for their 2017 So It Goes… concerts at the Manchester International Festival. With full access to New Order and their collaborators, this film is an unprecedented and intimate celebration of their story and their music. Through personal interviews with the band members and close collaborators including Gillick and art director Peter Saville, ‘New Order: Decades’ offers a rare chance to enter the band’s private world, understand the visual philosophy of their aesthetic and design, and witness their collaborative, creative processes first hand.

Dan Setford edited the documentary supported by Richard Lester and Gwyn Moxham who worked their magic on the concert footage.

Here’s what the guys had to say about their time on the edit:

Rich Lester  “It was a real pleasure to work with Mike Christie and Dan Setford. The amazing lighting design by Liam Gillick was an inspiration for cutting the performance sequences and being able to dance along to the iconic songs whilst editing was great fun!”

Gwyn Moxham agreed stating “It was great to work on – super high energy concert, great music, interesting cutting the young synthesiser orchestra that they had with the band etc. Also was great working with Dan again and also with the director”

Dan, who was lead editor, loved the whole experience, both from a career and personal point of view “What made this such a special project for me personally is that I am a massive New Order fan. Without a doubt it’s rare opportunity to work on a project where you completely love the subject matter!  Luckily Mike is a very technical director and has a clear understanding of workflow, so I thought he must have a cunning plan! Well he did. It was to drag me along to the shoot in Vienna and out of the comfort of the edit suite. This was a great move from Mike. It allowed the edit to be thought about from the get go. Something which isn’t always done when it comes to shooting a documentary.  ‘Decades’ was a joy and privilege to edit. It could have easily made me want to cower whenever I heard a New Order track after finishing the film. Well it didn’t! Actually it had the opposite effect! I now again enjoy being told to turn it down by my very patient wife and two boys. Where now I have the hope that I may one day add a few more New Order fans to our house”

The Final nominations have been announced and we are proud to see that ‘The Fight for Mosul’ edited by Ella Newton and ‘Old People’s Home for Four Year Olds’ edited by Belle Borgeaud have made it to the shortlist. The Griersons are the biggest event in the UK documentary calendar. The award ceremony takes place on Monday 5^th Nov and the Satusfaction team will be there to celebrate!

The Fight for Mosul: Mongoose Pictures for Channel

Edited by Ella Newton, The Fight for Mosul follows Jamal, a sergeant with a Special Forces unit in the Iraqi army. Along with squad leader Anmar, Hussein, Amjad, Abbas and a few others were some of the first to go into Mosul last year to try to retake the city from Isis. With them was French film-maker Olivier Sarbi.  This observational documentary captures all aspects of war, the confusion of what’s going on, the confusion of who is Isis and who is not and the horror for. It has been nominated in the ‘Best Current Affairs Documentary’ category.

Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds: CPL Productions for Channel 4

Pre-schoolers share their classroom with pensioners for six weeks. The series looked at this intergenerational experiment and how it affected the health and happiness of the older group.  Belle Borgeaud worked on the series which has been nominated in the ‘Best Constructed Documentary Series’.

Greg Davies and Taylor Lautner are back for another eight-part series of Cuckoo on BBC3 after a two year hiatus. Jen Sheridan edited the brilliant  new series which sees  Ken have a midlife wobble and Dale take on a new business venture!

Jen said that “It was an absolute pleasure to cut, especially the big opening musical number!”

The first episode is on BBC1 at 10.45 on Monday 6th Aug and the series 4 boxset is available on BBC iplayer now.

The 2018 Shortlist has been announced and we are super proud that Ella Newton, Paul Holland and Dan Setford have all worked on documentaries that have been shortlisted!

The Fight for Mosul: Mongoose Pictures for Channel 4. Ella Newton worked on this critical and intimate documentary which follows a group of young soldiers leading the fight to defeat ISIS. Directed by Olivier Sarbil and James Jones. It has been shortlisted in the ‘Best Single Documentary-International.

Paul Holland worked on the amazing Mercury 13: Fine Point Films for Netflix. This documentary profiles women who were tested in 1961 for spaceflight, but had their dreams dashed when only men were chosen to become astronauts. It’s currently available to watch on Netflix. Diected by David Sington and Heather Walsh.

Hansa Studios: By the Wall 1976-90 for Sky Arts has been shortlisted in the Best Arts or Music Documentary category. Dan Setford edited this Feature length documentary that unpicks the extraordinary legacy of Hansa Studios. Directed by Mike Christie.

Congratulations to Ella Newton and the team at Mongoose Pictures. We are super excited to hear that Mosul has been nominated for two Emmys: Outstanding Short Doc and Outstanding Cinematography! On top of that, it has also made it to the shortlist in for the 2018 Grierson Trust Awards for Best Current Affairs Documentary and Best Single Documentary-International.

 Mosul follows Jamal, a sergeant with a Special Forces unit in the Iraqi army. Ella said “I was spoilt in this job with such rare to get and beautifully shot rushes, and also to get to hear all the experiences shooting it direct from Olivier ( Saebil) the crazy genius! But it was also intense in that even while we were editing people Olivier had been with on the Unit had been killed or badly injured.  The composers are actually from Massive Attack! And they were good to work with so that’s pretty cool”

Self-made millionaire and founder of Bank Of Dave, Dave Fishwick, will help ordinary people to ‘get rich quick’ in a new 6 x 30-minute features series for Channel 4. How To Get Rich Quick will chart Fishwick’s attempts to teach people the money making skills which helped him become a self-made millionaire. With Dave’s great tips – his money making manifesto – at the heart of the series, the show aims to give people practical tools to make their money grow. There is also invaluable insight into world of personal finance.

Sarjit Bains and Dan Stewart were the main editors of the series, with help from Martin Sole, Miles Green, Hannah Woolfson, Tom Deverell and Ian Smith!

The first episode is on tonight 8.30pm Channel 4

This documentary edited by Graham Taylor is the incredible story of the battle for PrEP on the NHS: a legal fight which saw doctors, activists and AIDS charities come together to overturn the NHS decision. It was the start of an emotive battle which would see the cost of the treatment publicly pitted against the cost of prosthetic limbs, blood cancer drugs and drugs for children with cystic fibrosis.

At the heart of the story is one man, Greg Owen, who helped stop thousands becoming HIV positive by setting up a website which allowed people to buy generic PrEP from drug manufacturers in India. Despite being homeless and without a wage, Greg found himself running Britain’s main gateway to PrEP from his mother’s kitchen in Belfast.

Part of the BBC’s NHS at 70 season marking the 70th anniversary of the NHS, this film explores the hugely complex decisions facing a cash-strapped health service in one of the most difficult periods in its history.

Graham said “it was an honour to work on such an important story and to have the chance to tell the story both for BBC and also in an additional feature length version (which is forthcoming), providing the chance to go deeper into a story that reveals much about contemporary social and political issues”.

The People Vs The NHS: Who Gets The Drugs? will be aired Wednesday 27 June 9pm BBC2.

Satu and Katie had a wonderful time as usual at the Sheffield Documentary Festival. Lots of interesting, powerful and hard-hitting films were screened as well as informative talks and an amazing array of Alternative Realities to experience.  Here are out top pics of films to look out for:

Three Identical Strangers:

We are slightly biased as Michael Harte edited this amazing documentary. However we weren’t the only ones who were excited to see it. Crowds of people turned up for the screening and had to be turned away so the festival had to put on another screening so people didnt miss out!

In 1980, three identical triplets, complete strangers raised in entirely different New York households, managed to discover each other, decades after they had been separated at birth. But behind the splashy headlines lurked a disturbing secret which called into question the very notion of who we are.

No Greater Law:

Katie watched this film about the Idaho Followers of Christ who don’t believe in any kind of medical intervention. The state currently permits them to practice faith healing instead. The local sheriff has witnessed too many children die, and he and ex-followers determined to change the law. It’s a slow paced film, and incredibly emotive- but a must see! Watch the Trailer: here 

Gun No 6

The screening for this was at 9am! Poor Katie had to get up early after partying into the early hours to see this one, and it was a brutal watch!  She doesn’t regret getting up though, and thoroughly recommends this film.

Changing hands over a decade, used in eleven shootings and three murders, this is the story of Britain’s deadliest illegal gun: Gun No. 6. The film explores why men pick up guns and the shockwaves that follow each shooting, for victims, police, communities and perpetrators.

For the Birds

A woman’s love for her pet ducks, chickens, geese, and turkeys—all 200 of them—ignites a battle with local animal rescuers and puts her marriage in jeopardy.

The story doesn’t sound that gripping, but Satu loved this documentary. The main character was utterly fascinating and it was beautifully crafted together.

The Ballymurphy Precedent tells the unknown story death of eleven innocent people at the hands of the British Army in a Catholic estate in Belfast in 1971. This is a massacre that few have heard of, yet it was one of the most significant events in the Troubles. The British army continues to cover it up because they cannot afford to admit the truth. The relatives of those who died are fighting for justice – and our investigation shows why. This secret massacre led directly to the Bloody Sunday killings by the same Parachute regiment just five months later.

The World Premiere will be at Sheffield Doc Festival Monday 11^th June and it will also be screened there on Tuesday 12^th June.
